ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a portrait painter. Objects and places are viewed as complete beings. I craft portraits of hills, animals, people and objects. The edges are of interest to me - where one spirit begins and the other ends. My focus on the object singles it out and makes it larger than life. The cup, the hills and the tree are glorified, revealing their being and inner movement in an entirely new way. The end result is a deification of the object. I paint saints, monumental portraits of cups and eggs and underpants. Overlapping figures illustrate the intersecting aspects of our union. Like a sculptor building layers, I follow my subject’s currents using paint to create. Each group of paintings, whether centered on an object or an abstraction, is a journey. The beauty of painting is that it is organic, articulated through an element of chance. I find the point, and then move on to another one in ways that I do not envision beforehand. In each of my series of paintings, I drive the work in a particular direction, but at the same time it has a life of its own.

Each series of paintings begins with a concept and closes with a poem. The combined group of paintings builds a narrative, which in turn writes this poem. In the end, I find I have created a language of both visual and verbal imagery. The words are important because they express the shared significance of each freestanding painting in the series. They encapsulate the underlying metaphor that transports meaning from one thing to another and transports the beholder to a new place and plane of realization.
