About the Artist

Judy Gittelsohn has been painting in the Bay Area for over 30 years. She exhibits widely and her work is collected around the world.
Judy follows her own wondrous path from one concept to the next using paint as her narrative account. Her painting focus drifts from interpreting words and letters, giving them meaning, building a story, to beholding the natural world, featuring plants, planets, landscapes and abstracts. Often her work is layered in both subjects and in paint. The first layer of paint sets the tone. It maybe a word or an idea and then Judy builds the painting layer upon layer to be an object or an abstract. The final painting is built of these layers of thoughts and paint and often results in a simple elegant form. Her series of paintings are sensitive studies of an idea, forming a language that becomes familiar allowing these paintings to become vocabulary of our time.
Judy is a Golden Paints Certified Working Artist. Golden is an American Company dedicated to making top quality paint for professional artists. She educates artists about the vast variety of Golden products and their uses.

Artist Statement

My recent paintings are large acrylic color studies of words, letters, symbols and potions. These characters are placed in an atmosphere and rendered like a portrait. I like to take philosophical turns and twists on these everyday symbols. It is their emotion and character that I aim to reveal. My letters do not have to stand or support; they can float and fly and disappear and reveal. Paint can take us where physics cannot.
While my subject is contemporary, my approach is traditional. Layers of blended paint, shaped and forged, form my oversized view of each subject. The final image resembles enlarged pop art. The traditional painting approach and my close look at language and symbols is unexpected. I enjoy translating common symbols into visual compositions and telling a new story.

Portraits are my bag. It is the sense of the subject that I attempt to explain. While my version is symbolic, my approach is traditional. Layers of blended paint, shaped and forged, form my view.

To write my first blog well, I just spent the last two hours trolling the internet watching Jennifer Lawrence, she’s adorable, looking for my former blog.  I didn’t find it until just now two plus hours later to find that I didn’t really write anything of value.  So watch out here comes value.

Meaning, as my dear brother said, stick to what you know… not writing.  I’ll show him.  I’ve spent my life so far trying…
